Julie Hicks

Calgary Registered Social Worker
MSW RSW

With more than 25 years of experience as a Registered Social Worker, I have had the opportunity to support adults and couples in a variety of settings, including crisis response, counselling, and longer-term therapeutic work. My practice is rooted in the belief that every person’s story deserves care, curiosity, and respect. I aim to offer a grounded, confidential, and genuinely compassionate space where clients can explore what is happening in their lives and feel supported while doing so.

Before entering the social work profession, I spent several years practising as a massage therapist. That early training continues to influence my work today, sparking a lifelong interest in the interplay between body and mind. I am particularly drawn to the science of stress and trauma, including how overwhelming experiences affect the nervous system, how the body adapts, and what helps it heal. This understanding shapes my holistic style, which blends somatic awareness with traditional talk therapy to support meaningful and sustainable change.

My clinical work includes helping people navigate a wide spectrum of issues such as trauma (both personal and intergenerational), relationship challenges, identity changes, health concerns, grief, and workplace pressure. I have extensive experience supporting first responders and their families, and I understand the complex emotional, relational, and occupational demands within that world. I also work closely with neurodivergent clients, including individuals with ADHD, Autism, and Learning Disabilities, and I strive to offer care that is respectful, affirming, and accessible.

In individual therapy, I draw from an integrated mix of evidence-informed approaches such as Mindful Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and modalities that support complex trauma and grief processing. My sessions are shaped collaboratively and guided by your goals, your pace, and your lived experience. I help people identify patterns that are no longer serving them, reconnect with their inner strengths, and move toward a life that feels more aligned and grounded.

When working with couples, I take a practical and forward-focused approach. My goal is to help partners strengthen communication, deepen emotional connection, understand patterns of conflict, and foster healthier relational habits. Whether navigating a period of strain, adjusting to a major life transition, or working through attachment wounds, couples leave with clear tools and a renewed sense of possibility.

At the heart of my work is the belief that therapy should help people return to themselves, including their resilience, their clarity, and their capacity for connection. My role is to walk alongside you with steadiness and presence as you move toward healing, insight, and growth.

Julie at Home

I live and work in Calgary, where I stay grounded through movement, creativity, and spending time in nature. Whole-person wellness is something I value deeply, and it shapes how I move through my own life. I incorporate practices such as journaling, different styles of movement, breathwork, and quiet outdoor moments to stay connected and centered.

Whether I am guiding a group or taking time to sit in stillness, I am continually exploring how to bring more curiosity, presence, and ease into everyday living.
