Somatic Experiencing® in Calgary
A Body-Based Approach to Trauma, Stress & Nervous System Healing
Sometimes we understand what happened to us. We may have talked about it, made sense of it, and even reached a place where we know logically that the experience is over.
And yet, the body can still respond as though something is wrong.
You may notice tension that never completely settles. A racing heart. Feeling constantly on guard. Difficulty relaxing. Emotional overwhelm. Numbness or disconnection. Trouble sleeping. Or a nervous system that seems to move quickly into fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a gentle, body-oriented approach designed to support people experiencing the effects of trauma, chronic stress, and nervous system dysregulation.
Rather than focusing only on the story of what happened, Somatic Experiencing pays attention to how your nervous system is responding in the present moment.
At Soul Healing Collective in Calgary, Jessica offers Somatic Experiencing-informed support to help clients reconnect with their bodies, develop a greater sense of internal safety, and gradually move toward greater regulation, resilience, and ease.
What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Dr. Peter Levine as a body-oriented approach to working with the physiological effects of stress and trauma.
When we experience something overwhelming, the nervous system automatically mobilizes to protect us. We may move into fight, flight, freeze, collapse, or other protective responses.
These reactions are not conscious choices. They are part of the body's survival system.
Sometimes, however, the nervous system can continue responding long after the immediate danger has passed. A person may intellectually know that they are safe while their body continues to anticipate threat.
This can show up as:
- Hypervigilance or constantly scanning for danger
- Feeling easily startled
- Anxiety or panic
- Muscle tension or physical bracing
- Restlessness or difficulty slowing down
- Sleep difficulties
- Irritability
- Feeling overwhelmed by seemingly small stressors
- Emotional numbness
- Feeling disconnected from your body
- Freeze or shutdown responses
- Difficulty feeling safe even when nothing is obviously wrong
- Feeling as though your body is always "on"
- Difficulty returning to calm after becoming activated
Somatic Experiencing works with these responses gently and gradually.
Instead of forcing you to revisit traumatic experiences in detail, Jessica helps you notice what is happening within your body and nervous system while staying connected to experiences of stability, choice, and support.
How Trauma Affects the Nervous System
When we experience something threatening or overwhelming, the nervous system automatically responds to help protect us. We may move into fight or flight, preparing the body to confront or escape danger, or into freeze or shutdown when fighting or fleeing does not feel possible. These are natural survival responses, but after trauma or prolonged stress, the nervous system can sometimes continue responding as though danger is still present—even when we know intellectually that we are safe.
This can look different for everyone. Some people feel constantly "on," anxious, restless, irritable, or hypervigilant. You may startle easily, have difficulty sleeping, experience muscle tension, or find it hard to truly relax. Others experience more of a freeze or shutdown response, including numbness, exhaustion, disconnection, brain fog, or feeling distant from themselves or others. Some people find themselves moving between these states.
Understanding these experiences as nervous system responses rather than personal failings can create a different starting point for healing.
How Somatic Experiencing Can Help
Somatic Experiencing® works with both the body and nervous system to support a gradual return toward greater regulation, flexibility, and a felt sense of safety. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or the story of what happened, Somatic Experiencing pays attention to how experiences of stress and trauma are showing up in the body in the present moment.
This gentle, body-based approach may be helpful for people experiencing trauma or PTSD, anxiety, chronic stress, hypervigilance, emotional overwhelm, difficulty relaxing, disconnection or numbness, and patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. It can also be valuable for people who understand their experiences intellectually, or who have already done significant talk-based work, but continue to feel the effects of stress or trauma physically.
The goal isn't to eliminate the body's protective responses. Instead, Somatic Experiencing helps you become more aware of them while gradually expanding your nervous system's capacity to move through activation and return to a more regulated state.
What Happens in a Somatic Experiencing Session?
Sessions with Jessica are collaborative, gentle, and paced according to what feels manageable for you. Alongside conversation, Jessica may invite you to notice what is happening in your body—perhaps your breathing, areas of tension or relaxation, temperature, tingling, heaviness, movement impulses, changes in posture, or places that feel more settled or supported.
An important part of Somatic Experiencing is noticing these experiences without becoming overwhelmed by them. Rather than moving directly into the most difficult aspects of an experience, Jessica can help you slow things down and work with smaller, manageable pieces while also noticing experiences of comfort, stability, choice, and connection.
You do not need to recount every detail of a traumatic experience for somatic work to occur. For people who find repeatedly talking about trauma overwhelming—or who simply notice that their body seems to hold reactions that words haven't fully resolved—this can offer another pathway into healing.
There is also no particular sensation or response you are expected to have. Sometimes meaningful changes are very subtle: a fuller breath, a softening of tension, warmth returning to the body, an impulse to move, or simply noticing that you feel a little more present.
Begin Somatic Experiencing with Jessica
You may understand why you feel the way you do and still notice that your body responds as though it needs to protect you. Somatic Experiencing offers a gentle way to begin working with these responses—not by forcing the body to relax or pushing you to revisit experiences before you're ready, but by gradually building greater awareness, regulation, and capacity within your nervous system.
Whether you are navigating the effects of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, chronic stress, or simply feel that your body has been carrying more than it can comfortably hold, Jessica can meet you where you are and support you in taking the next step.
